Clear teeth aligners and posture!? Now that’s a
pair. Not necessarily a pair you would put together though! Malverne
teeth aligners are common today.
Malverne Health & Wellness sees many Malverne chiropractic patients
who have chosen to use these new devices to straighten
teeth. They are virtually invisible.
They are flexible. They come out when the clear aligner wearer desires
to remove them. Wearers gain some
control of the procedure. All is good, and yet the treatment planning
like that of Invisalign® is newer technology. Everyone is finding
out more about it. Malverne Health & Wellness hadn’t imagined
that orthodontic and Malverne chiropractic treatment plans might come in contact with each other. Surprise!
TOOTH ALIGNMENT TREATMENT AND PLANNING
Most Malverne chiropractic patients recall
(too well for some!) the classic fixed
appliances (braces) used by orthodontists to straighten
teeth. Many Malverne orthodontic patients experienced
them firsthand! Research writes that in
using Invisalign® technology, tooth type and movement are important
factors to think about when the
treatment plan is arranged. Invisalign® technology allows
clinicians to calculate tooth positions with high
accuracy when done in nonextraction cases, but some of the actual
outcomes may differ from those predictions.
Most differences were not clinically relevant though. (1) Malocclusion
(a misalignment or incorrect relationship of
the teeth of the two dental arches when they come
close to each other as the jaws close) influences
teeth straightening treatment planning. In a comparison study of Invisalign® to
these conventional fixed appliances for
mild to moderate malocclusion issues, they both corrected
the condition. Invisalign® wearers finished faster
(by 5.7 months!). Invisalign® improvement was not as “great” in effectiveness
as fixed appliances. (2) One
study planned to determine relationships
between body posture in the sagittal profile and sagittal jaw position. The
mandible (lower jaw) has a greater effect
on body posture than other craniofacial factors, so patients
with severe malocclusions need to be extended extra consideration
especially if a jaw surgery is being
considered. (3)
Malverne Health & Wellness is fine with having the Malverne
orthodontists determine this!
TOOTH ALIGNMENT WITH INVISALIGN AND POSTURE
But Malverne Health & Wellness is ready to help when posture issues
arise in the process of aligning teeth . A recent study reports that clear,
occlusal coverage aligners like Invisalign® may well sway
body posture. The upper spine and lower spine sections are affected. After 6 months of
wearing these clear aligners, the Kyphosis Angle, the Upper Thoracic Inclination and
Pelvic Inclination were altered. It’s been reported
that these clear aligners change a wearer’s vertical
height due to the occlusal coverage over the teeth and,
then, stimulate periodontal receptors inhibiting
the jaw closing muscles and, quite possibly, changing
mandibular posture. (4)
Malverne Health & Wellness is as astonished as our Malverne chiropractic
patients with all that is possible with these clear aligners!
Malverne Health & Wellness is aware of this potential and looks for it in Malverne chiropractic patients who wear
these.
